Indian Wheelchair Tennis Tour (IWTT) has been formed with an intent to create a vibrant wheelchair tennis culture in India and to use the power of sport to bring about personal transformation and social inclusion.
Research shows that playing wheelchair tennis has a tremendous impact on self-confidence, social skills and happiness of the player.
In order to create a thriving community of wheelchair tennis players in India, we need to introduce more differently abled people to the game of wheelchair tennis. This means identifying accessible tennis courts, providing sports wheelchairs, coaches, and other facilities. The First Serve conducted by IWTT is a beginner’s workshop to introduce the game to children and adults. The workshop is conducted by top national and international players.
A two-day beginner’s camp was conducted in Mumbai to introduce adults to the game of wheelchair tennis. The camp was conducted by Shiv Prasad, ranked No. 3 in India. 15 people attended the workshop.
Out of these 15 people 10 of them signed up for the a regular coaching camp for wheelchair tennis in Mumbai. Coaching camp is conducted on every Saturday and Sunday at Goregaon Sports Complex under the supervision of Mr. Anand Selvaraj, one of the top Wheelchair tennis players in India.
India’s first wheelchair tennis workshop for kids was conducted by IWTT in Bangalore. Nalani Buob of Switzerland, ranked No. 2 in the world in Girl’s Category conducted the workshop. We had 14 children participate in the workshop. The parents had an opportunity to interact with Nalani and her parents who spoke about the importance of sports for children with disabilities. The interaction resulted in parents supporting and encouraging their own children to pursue wheelchair tennis.
Currently,4 children and 3 adults are undergoing the coaching camp in Bangalore.
In the next 12 months, IWTT is planning on conducting beginner’s workshop, The First Serve in Ahmedabad, Agra, Khammam, Kolkata, Chandigarh & Bhopal thereby facilitating the development of wheelchair tennis across the country. All these workshops will be followed up with a regular Coaching camps.
